Wildfire glossary

Here are a few terms and definitions used by the B.C. Wildfire Service to describe wildfires.

• Contained: A control line has been completed around the fire and associated spot fires and the fire is expected to stop spreading.

• Control line: A constructed or natural barrier around a fire that has been treated with retardant or water which is used to control or contain a fire.

• Holdover fire: A fire that is undetected or dormant for some time after it is first sparked, such as a lightning-caused fired.

• Initial attack: The initial action undertaken by the first firefighting personnel to arrive at the scene in hopes of stopping the spread of a fire.

• Interface fire: A fire that has the potential to burn buildings and forest fuel or vegetation simultaneously.

• Mop-up: Extinguishing a fire after it has been brought under control.
