The Surrey Police Service has told independent investigators about a fatal pedestrian collision on Sunday night involving a police car.

At around 7:20 p.m., an SPS police vehicle struck a pedestrian, an adult woman, at the intersection of 152nd Street and 64th Avenue. She died at the scene despite life-saving attempts by officers, firefighters and paramedics.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified.

The area was closed to traffic as officers and investigators with the civilian-led oversight agency examined the scene.

SPS Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said police are “unable to provide additional information while the IIO’s independent process is taking place.”

The IIO investigates all police incidents in B.C. that lead to serious injury or death “that may have been the result of the actions or inactions of a police officer, whether on or off duty.”
