Some Vancouver Island BC Ferries sailings resume after earlier cancellations due to wind

BC Ferries says certain sailings to and from Vancouver Island have been cancelled Thursday amid high winds blowing near B.C.’s south coast.

Concerned for the safety of its customers and crew, the company says it’s taking Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) severe weather forecast seriously.

“An approaching low-pressure centre will track across the south coast this afternoon. In its wake, strong southwesterly winds 50 kilometres per hour gusting to 80 will develop late this afternoon through early this evening. Winds will gradually ease late this evening,” the agency said.

“If you have a booking on one of these cancelled sailings, you will hear from our Customer Service Centre to let you know if we can fit you on an alternate sailing later today, or if your booking must be cancelled,” said a statement on BC Ferries’ website.

“In the case of a cancellation, we will refund your fees and/or fares.”

The company warns it may be forced to cancel more sailings if conditions don’t improve.
