ICBC reports dozens of flood-related vehicle claims as Fraser Valley shifts to recovery

Insurers say claims are now being processed for homeowners and farmers after flooding in the Fraser Valley caused by a series of storms, which began last week.

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) says it has received 35 vehicle claims so far linked to flood damage, with the majority coming from Abbotsford, followed by Chilliwack and Hope.

Spokesperson Greg Harper says that number may rise as residents continue to assess damage to vehicles.

“We may see more claims come forward as the days move along here,” Harper told 1130 NewsRadio.

Harper says ICBC has a dedicated claims team to help impacted customers.

Residents with flood-related vehicle damage can report a claim online at icbc.com or by calling 1-800-910-4222.

Understanding coverage

Harper emphasized that the type of insurance a driver carries will determine coverage:

  • Comprehensive or specified perils coverage typically applies when a vehicle is parked and damaged by floodwaters.
  • Collision coverage generally applies when a vehicle incurs damage while being driven through water.

Harper is encouraging drivers to review their policies and speak with an Autoplan broker if they are unsure about their coverage, especially in areas prone to flooding.

“It’s important to know what coverage you have … so you’re protected in the event of a flood,” he said.

Last week’s flooding comes just four years after widespread devastation in the region during the historic 2021 floods.

Harper acknowledges that, while each weather event is unique, repeated incidents highlight the importance of preparation and risk awareness.

“It’s important to plan ahead and think of the worst-case scenario, and hopefully that doesn’t happen. But in the event we have a lot of rain — some floodwaters — and your vehicle does unfortunately get damaged, you know that you’re protected.”

In Abbotsford, the city has since lifted all flood-related evacuation alerts and orders. And to help residents rebuild, city council has approved temporary measures, including waiving certain building fees and fast-tracking permits for the next 12 months.

As assessments continue and more information becomes available, ICBC says it will provide updates for customers and the public.
