Fraser Highway, between 140th Street and 96th Avenue in Surrey, was closed for more than eight months in order to construct the new Green Timbers Station, which is expected to open by late 2029.
The extended closure was needed to safely and efficiently construct Green Timbers Station, located within Surrey’s Green Timbers Urban Forest and the only station among the eight additional stops to be built directly above the roadway. The remaining seven stations will be constructed beside the roadway.
The new Green Timbers Station will be at 140 Street and Fraser Highway, near the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre and Surrey Memorial Hospital.
“As the backbone of our rapid transit network, SkyTrain offers riders fast, frequent, high-capacity service. Our focus is to get Surrey residents where they need to go quickly, safely, and affordably,” reads a statement from the City of Surrey.
Surrey, along with the Township of Langley and City of Langley, are expected to increase in population by 400,000 over the next 30 years, marking the need for more transit options, the cities state.
“This growth will place pressure on our transportation system, economy and environment as a result of planned increased land use development along the Fraser Highway corridor,” the city of Surrey said in a statement. “SkyTrain will help reduce additional automobile use in south of Fraser (River) and encourage first and last mile trips by active transportation.”
The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project is a 16-kilometre extension of the Expo Line, with the elevated structure allowing users to travel along Fraser Highway from King George SkyTrain Station to Langley Centre.

The closure of the portion of Fraser Highway was expected to lift at the end of October, but was extended into mid-December.

While drivers may be happy the portion of Fraser Highway reopened, traffic pattern changes along the route will continue through to 2028.
Some changes coming include single lane traffic in each direction on Fraser Highway between 140 Street and 96 Avenue. Travel lanes will also change based on the location of work being done and the multi-use pathways will remain closed to pedestrians and cyclists, with alternate routes available.
Additionally, left turn restrictions will be in place for Fraser Highway southbound onto 140 Street, and 140 Street eastbound onto Fraser Highway.
As crews work Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Green Timbers Station appears to be the most advanced of the eight stations in construction.
Three new bus exchanges will also be introduced to go along with the extended route.
In the coming spring season, railway tracks and electrical systems will begin installation and are planned to finish in late 2028. The elevated guideway construction is expected to be complete by mid-2027 with the entire construction of the station coming to an end by the end of 2028.
The full SkyTrain Expo Line expansion connecting King George Station to 203 Street in Langley is expected to open in late 2029.
