Mission hospital to close overnight from Dec. 29 to Jan. 6

Beginning Monday, Dec. 29 until Tuesday, Jan. 6, the emergency department at Mission’s hospital will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., closing overnight. Full emergency coverage will resume on Jan. 7 at 8 a.m.

Mission Memorial Hospital’s emergency room will close overnight and operating only during the days over the next week and a half as it deals with a physician shortage.

“We will continue to make every effort to prevent further service adaptations. If any future adaptations are required, we will communicate them to the community in advance,” says a notice issued Friday by Fraser Health.

Mission Memorial has long been plagued by closures due to doctor shortages, including on Halloween night. Mission ER has closed at least three times in 2025 and four times in 2024.

Fraser Health says it’s working to recruit physicians, but the struggles at Mission Memorial reflect “systemic pressures being experienced across Canada.”

“Knowing that emergency services are reliably available is important for us and our community,” said Dr. Paul Theron, site medical director for Mission Memorial Hospital.

Mission’s emergency department will remain staffed overnight by emergency-trained nurses who can treat those needing basic care. Those with more urgent needs will be redirected to another hospital.
