One person is dead after suffering a suspected medical event while driving and crashing his vehicle near the University of British Columbia Monday night.

The University RCMP says it responded to reports of the crash on Blanca Street near West 16th Avenue shortly after 9 p.m.

“The male driver, who was the sole occupant, apparently suffered a medical event which led to the vehicle leaving the roadway and impacting a light pole,” Mounties described Tuesday morning.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Images from after the incident show police surrounding a black SUV stopped in a roadside ditch.

Police say no one else was reported injured in the crash, and it is not believed to be criminal in nature.
