IIO investigating Surrey Police arrest of woman in November

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) announced Wednesday that it’s investigating an incident from November in which a woman was first arrested and later released by the Surrey Police Service (SPS).

Investigators were called in because the woman sustained injuries during the arrest, for which she sought medical treatment the day after.

The IIO says the woman entered an SPS district office in the city’s Whalley neighbourhood to speak with officers on Nov. 2.

The interaction led to her arrest outside the police station shortly after.

Then, officers released the woman without charges, and she was transported home.

The day after, she went to a hospital to receive treatment for her injuries, which she claims she had sustained from the interaction.

The IIO says, “the woman’s injuries meet the threshold of serious harm.”

Investigators are now examining all available evidence to determine if the action or inaction of the officers is connected to the woman’s injuries.
