Second-degree murder charges have been laid against 26-year-old Sondeep Singh Gill of Abbotsford after police found a dead body at a local hotel on Thursday.

Just before noon on Thursday, police said they responded to a call about a “suspicious circumstance” at a hotel on the 32100 block of Marshall Road, and found an incident had taken place in one of the rooms. Further evidence confirmed that it was a homicide, Sgt. Paul Walker said in a news release.

Gill was arrested and remains in custody. He has also been charged with indignity to human remains. The victim was a 30-year-old woman who lived in Abbotsford. The relationship between the two has yet to be determined.

“The quick response and strong investigational work from AbbyPD officers and the investigative team at IHIT was instrumental in getting the investigation to this stage,” said RCMP Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and loved ones of the woman during this difficult time.”

As this matter is before the courts, IHIT will not be able to provide any additional information. Police said the death is believed to be an isolated incident and not connected to the continuing extortion shootings that have plagued the Lower Mainland.
