Metro Vancouver under fog advisory until Tuesday

Several areas across Metro Vancouver have been experiencing heavy fog this weekend, with near-zero visibility in some areas.

Environment Canada has issued a fog advisory, which will continue for the next couple days.

“A ridge of high pressure over B.C. is trapping moisture near the surface, creating areas of dense fog across Metro Vancouver, and especially near the Strait of Georgia, Burrard Inlet, Boundary Bay, and the Fraser River,” the weather service says.

“While visibility may improve in the afternoons, fog is expected to redevelop each night.”

The advisory applies to multiple municipalities across the region, including:

  • Richmond;
  • Delta;
  • White Rock;
  • Surrey;
  • Langley;
  • Coquitlam; and
  • Maple Ridge.

Fog-related issues at Vancouver International Airport

Vancouver International Airport says it experienced several flight delays Saturday morning due to low-lying fog.

The airport says Saturday saw five flights diverted, to locations including Abbotsford International Airport, Victoria International Airport, and Calgary International Airport.

On Sunday, a spokesman told 1130 NewsRadio that foggy conditions continue at the airport, with flights operating under low-visibility conditions.

“This means we may see some adjustments to flight schedules as NAV CANADA and airlines manage arrivals and departures to the weather conditions we are currently experiencing,” the spokesperson said.

“We continue to work closely with our airline partners to get travellers on their way.”

The airport says the conditions could continue for the next few days.

“YVR has 24-hour access to meteorologists and weather forecasts. Current forecasts are seeing fog continue into tomorrow, and likely into Wednesday.”

Travellers should check their flight status before arriving at the airport.

Drivers on foggy roads are advised to turn on their lights, slow down, and maintain a safe following distance.

Environment Canada’s advisory is in place until Tuesday afternoon.
