Surrey police investigating after occupant suspected of returning fire amid extortion-related shooting

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says it has opened a second criminal investigation into an extortion-related shooting over the weekend, over allegations that an occupant or occupants of the targeted home shot back at their assailants.

Police were called to a residence on Galway Crescent near Tulsy Crescent shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found a home damaged by gunfire.

On the weekend, the SPS said only that the home was occupied and no one had been injured.

On Monday, Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed to 1130 NewsRadio that investigators are now looking into whether one or more people inside the residence “carelessly” fired weapons during the incident.

“Throughout the day on Saturday and through the weekend, our officers were able to examine the scene, and there was information and evidence that they collected that led them to believe that possibly individuals inside the targeted residence may have used firearms themselves,” said Houghton.

He says no suspects have been arrested in relation to either investigation, but says the occupants of the house have all been identified.

Houghton says the alleged shootings both show a “blatant disregard for neighbours and public safety.”

“Police absolutely do not condone or support vigilantism and taking the matter into your own hands. And using weapons such as firearms puts everybody in the community at risk.”

The SPS confirmed that residents of the home had reported being targeted by threats of extortion to police before the shooting.
