The last time the sun set past the fifth hour was in mid-November last year.

For many people, a later sunset means better days ahead, especially for those who struggle with winter blues.

Dr. Shimi Kang, a Vancouver-based psychiatrist, says that many people experience a decrease in their mental health during the winter months.

She said approximately one in three people has a diagnosable mental health condition, and many find their symptoms get worse during the darker days of the year.

Kang says that mood issues, brain fog, and low energy are not just in our heads; they are a chemical-based reaction to the lack of sunshine.

“The sun is a major source of serotonin, enhances mood, and improves our brain productivity,” she told 1130 NewsRadio.

Kang says that the later sunsets are a reason to celebrate, because our bodies and moods are regulated by the seasons.

“We made it this far. And so a bit of celebration getting past the January blues. And yeah, really embrace the environment you’re in.”

For those who struggle with low energy, she says there are ways to help oneself to stay afloat.

“Keep some light in your windows. Don’t use blackout blinds. And then the minute you wake up, look outside, even into a sliver of light,” Kang said.

“If you wake up earlier than the sun rises, then try to get a sunlamp or a happy lamp.”

Additionally, she recommends getting outside as much as possible, even on cloudy days and considering taking vitamin D supplements.

The spring solstice, or equinox, on March 20 is less than eight weeks away.
