Two Kamloops junior hockey players among three dead in Alberta crash

Two Kamloops teens playing with the Southern Alberta Mustangs were among three players killed in a collision with a truck on Monday morning.

The players were on their way to practice when the crash occurred.

According to the RCMP, the collision occurred at 11 a.m. on Highway 2 near Stavely, Alberta, when a semi truck pulling gravel and a small passenger vehicle carrying the three hockey players collided.

The driver of the semi, a 40-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

However, the three hockey players — Cameron Casorso and JJ Wright, both 18 of Kamloops, B.C., and 17-year-old Carson Fine from Alabama — died at the scene.

“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief,”

the team wrote in a social media post

.

“These young men were more than hockey players — they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.

“Our hearts are with the families, friends, billet families, teammates, coaches, and everyone who loved them. We ask that their families be given privacy and compassion as they navigate this devastating loss. We are a family, and today our family is hurting.”

The organization said it was co-ordinating further details with law enforcement agencies.

The players’ names were confirmed by the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association in a statement to Kelowna media outlet Castanet.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith posted their condolences on social media.

The Southern Alberta Mustangs formed in 2019 and are based in Stavely, approximately an hour south of Calgary.

The team website state they play in the U.S. Premier Hockey League “at a competitive level without the restrictions of local minor hockey and Hockey Alberta.”
