Due to the impact against the rock wall, the paraglider was hanging unconscious in his harness.
Crews say the area where the person crashed was challenging to reach and posed a significant fall potential.
The NSR says that a hiker who saw what happened climbed up the cliff, removed the paraglider’s harness, and administered first aid, which likely saved the paraglider’s life.

“This bystander rendered aid at risk to himself, and we would like to extend our thanks for his life-saving actions,” the NSR added.
Cowichan SAR was unable to reach the location of the paraglider and requested assistance from two veteran hoist technicians from the NSR.
Approaching the scene on Talon Helicopters, the hoist techs were able to use a down-sloping ledge to reach the paraglider and hoist the person out.
The bystander was also hoisted out by the airborne rescuers.
The rescue operation started during dusk, and the rescuers needed to use night vision goggles for the last stretch of it.
Upon landing, the B.C. The Emergency Health Service took care of the paraglider.
