Driver fatally strikes pedestrian in Surrey

An 81-year-old woman died Wednesday evening after the driver of a vehicle struck her near Surrey’s City Centre.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says first responders were called to the scene on 102 Avenue near Whalley Boulevard around 6:30 p.m.

Police say the driver was heading east before colliding with a pedestrian.

“Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries,” said an SPS statement.

The driver reportedly stayed on scene, and police say investigators do not suspect speed or impairment to have been contributing factors.

Images from the scene show a sedan with a dented front hood and a destroyed metal shopping caddy in the street.

102 Avenue was closed to traffic between 137A and 139 streets for several hours into the night but has since reopened.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam video to share are asked to contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-14161 (SP).
