Special weather statement forecasts cold, snow in B.C.’s south coast

Lower Mainland residents should prepare for cooler weather this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for areas covering Metro Vancouver and much of B.C.’s south coast Monday.

The agency says a system rolling in from the north will arrive Monday, bringing cold temperatures and light precipitation through the night.

The statement says areas at higher elevations can expect snowfall.

1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Carl Lam says relief from the cold may not come until the end of the week.

“During the middle of the week, [temperatures will be] pretty low. We could have some snowflakes even out at YVR, too. So we’re certainly watching this closely as it is a fluid week,” said Lam.

He says the forecast isn’t typical for February.

“Our average daytime high for this time of year should be nine degrees, and our average overnight low is two degrees. And I have us during the week here with temperatures between four and five degrees. So we’re actually closer to the low.”

Lam says Lower Mainland residents shouldn’t expect a blizzard, but says sub-zero precipitation might make for “slick and slippery” roads.

ECCC says drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing travel conditions.

“Motorists should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility and slippery surfaces.”
