Driver’s licenses could soon be renewed online in B.C.

Renewing your B.C. driver’s license could become that much easier.

The province says its proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act would make it possible to renew or replace driver’s licenses, BC Identification (BCID), and photo BC Service Cards online, through ICBC’s website.

The government says the new process would save time, particularly for drivers in rural or remote communities who must travel long distances for in-person appointments.

However, if passed, the online service would not be available until 2027.

The province says all eligible drivers with full B.C. licenses with classes 1 through 8 are eligible for online renewals, including in cases of lost, destroyed, or damaged licenses.

The amendment will not include people with learner’s licences, who will still be required to make an in-person appointment.

The same applies to people who want to make changes to their name or address, as well as drivers with outstanding fines, tickets, or other violations.

Other provinces, including Ontario and Alberta, already offer an online renewal process for driver’s licenses.

“Too many people have to take time off work or travel long distances just to renew or replace their ID,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General and responsible minister for ICBC.

The government says the online service is part of ICBC’s multiphase, 10-year modernization program.
