Kuss says it may be the first time the weather station at Vancouver International Airport records more than a trace of snow all season.
“We had a trace there on Feb. 20,” said Kuss.
Arctic air began flooding toward the coast over the weekend, he explains.
“Hence, all the snow in the interior and over the mountain passes.”
To the east, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a snowfall warning for the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt.
The agency has forecast 15 to 20 centimetres falling on the highway starting Monday morning, warning of low visibility and “challenging” travel.
Snow may be a factor in a crash that has closed the highway from Merritt to the Coquihalla Lakes exit near the old toll booth site.
DriveBC estimates the Coquihalla Highway will reopen around 7:30 a.m.
With Arctic air from the east and a weak trough along the coast, Kuss says the Lower Mainland can expect flurries and a “dusting of snow” Monday, which could last as snow on the ground during the Tuesday morning commute.
He says the snow will come with dry weather and high temperatures around 7 degrees Celcius.
