Friday marked the last day of school before kids across British Columbia headed off on spring break, which means it is also one of the province’s busiest travel times of the year.
The Vancouver International Airport expects an estimated 1.2 million passengers to make their way through its terminals over the next two weeks, with some of the more popular international destinations being Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Domestically, Edmonton, Calgary, and Toronto top the list.
With around 70,000 people expected at the airport each day over spring break, YVR officials say that while things will be busy, they are taking precautions to allow travellers to move as smoothly as possible.
“You’ll notice there’s some new technology there for the screening process that will basically mean that people don’t need to take out those fluids, gels, and electronics,” said YVR spokesperson Megan Sutton.
“So hopefully that will make that a less stressful experience for travellers.”

While some are taking to the air, others have chosen to travel by sea, with BC Ferries also expecting a busier-than-normal few weeks.
“Many families do like to take advantage of school holidays to plan their vacation,” said Akriti Tyagi, senior communications adviser for BC Ferries.
“To help accommodate this demand, we have added 78 supplementary round-trips over our busiest routes from March 13 to March 29.”

For those travelling this spring break, both YVR and BC Ferries advise passengers to watch departure times and make sure you have all tickets and documentation in place to ensure a seamless vacation.
