RCMP video shows BC teen’s BMW joyride ends in crash with dump truck

The BC Highway Patrol released a video on Wednesday that shows a 16-year-old crashing a BMW into a dump truck after allegedly driving at a high speed last July.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says the released footage shows the teenager speeding at 180 km/h along Highway 1 in Chilliwack in his stepmother’s BMW sedan, putting himself and his friends, sitting in the vehicle, in great danger.

“The video that we released shows that the passengers who at first thought this might be sort of a fun thing to do quickly realized this was really dangerous. And that’s reflective of the findings that this young driver ultimately faced,” McLaughlin told 1130 NewsRadio.

“You can see how quickly the teen’s friends went from enjoying the ride to ‘don’t kill us.’”

After the driver crashed into a parked dump truck in a 100 km/h zone in Popkum, police impounded the car and called the stepmother of the driver to pick up the teenagers.

“You can see how excessive speed creates this really unsafe situation. I believe you can even see the driver focus so much on the task at hand that he doesn’t see what’s going on around him,” McLaughlin added.

The 16-year-old driver, holding a class 7 learner’s licence at the time of the incident, is now serving a 12-month licence suspension.

Additionally, he has been found guilty of seven violations, including excessive speed and driving contrary to restrictions. He was also fined over $1,500.

“If you have got young people who are driving, make sure you have a lot of ongoing dialogue with them about what is safe behaviour. Ultimately, as a registered owner of the vehicle, you’re responsible for many of the things that could happen in a collision, including the repairs, even potential insurance premiums,” McLaughlin said.
