I-5 blocked northbound just south of Bellingham due to landslides

Many Canadians may be reconsidering plans to travel to the U.S., but for those still driving south into Washington state, they may need to reconsider their route home.

All lanes of the I-5 northbound are blocked just south of Bellingham, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said in a news release.

This is due to two separate landslides, one near mile 248 and a second close to milepost 249.

The highway has been completely closed northbound between North Lake Samish Road and State Route 11/Old Fairhaven Parkway since the slides took place Thursday night.

WSDOT says thousands of cubic yards of boulders, trees, and debris flowed down a slope onto the highway.

Work to clear the road and stabilize the slope has begun, it says, but there is no estimate when the section of highway will reopen.

The I-5 remains open southbound. Northbound traffic is being diverted off at North Lake Samish/Exit 246.
