1 charged with manslaughter after fatal incident at Maple Ridge home

One week since a man died after a fight in a Maple Ridge home, homicide investigators say another man has been charged with manslaughter.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a report of a “fight in progress” at a residence on 110 Avenue near 237 Street around 7:30 p.m. on March 16.

When officers arrived, they found a 49-year-old man in medical distress.

“Despite life-saving efforts by officers and attending emergency health services, the [victim] did not survive,” said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which took over investigating that day.

One person was reportedly arrested at the scene.

In an update Tuesday, IHIT says the suspect, a 45-year-old man, was first charged with assault causing bodily harm. But as of Monday, the BC Prosecution Service upgraded the charge to one count of manslaughter related to the death.

Investigators say he remains in custody until his next court appearance. Records show he is due back in court on April 1.
