One of two hikers rescued near Lions Bay dies in hospital

North Shore Rescue joined rescuers from Lions Bay on Saturday, March 21, 2026, after two hikers slipped and fell on Mount Brunswick. One hiker has died.

A man who tried to help a fallen hiker on Mount Brunswick near Lions Bay during a weekend group hike has died in hospital, the B.C. Coroners Service said Tuesday.

On Saturday,

North Shore Rescue was called

in to help Lions Bay Search and Rescue after the hikers, part of a group of 14 on the mountain, slipped and fell.

The coroner’s investigation remains open but a spokesperson said no further information would be released.

The trouble began when a hiker fell a “significant distance” and hurt herself, the rescue group said in a social media post. One of the other hikers tried to climb down to help her, but he also slipped and fell.

The woman was rescued by Lions Bay rescuers, who were able to rope their way down and give her first aid.

North Shore rescuers had to be hoisted down to the man, who was further down in steep terrain just above a waterfall. He was treated by an emergency room doctor at the scene, then hoisted out and handed off to paramedics in Lions Bay in critical condition. The woman was then hoisted out and taken to hospital.

On Tuesday, a GoFundMe page organized by the Pacific Northwest Outdoor Association identified the deceased climber as Yan Cen, who was visiting from China.
