Vancouver crews investigating structure fire that displaced three

A fire broke out in a single-family home on Chambers Street near East 37th Avenue in Vancouver shortly before 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) says that when crews arrived, heavy black smoke was visible in front of the building.

“With reports that there were three people trapped inside, those three people had removed themselves from the home, so they were safe and outside,” Assistant Chief Keith Stewart told 1130 NewsRadio.

“We were able to quickly extinguish the fire.”

He adds that since the fire was put out rather quickly, the neighbouring houses on the south and north sides were not damaged.

Stewart says that the fire started inside.

“We believe it started in the basement, but it is still under investigation at this time.”

He says that the damage is “extensive” and that the power and gas connection to the home has been cut.

No injuries were reported. “BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) paramedics were not required at the scene,” BCEHS said in a statement.

Police responded to the scene as well to control traffic in the area.
