Mounties have arrested a suspect in relation to a fatal assault on a Chilliwack street last month.

The Chilliwack RCMP says two men, including the victim, were walking on Railway Avenue near Young Road on the night of Feb. 21 when the assault happened.

Two weeks later, the victim, a 49-year-old Dwight Nelson, died in hospital.

“Investigators believe the assault may have been a contributing factor in his death,” police said at the time.

In an update Thursday, Mounties announced that the investigation into the assault has resulted in the arrest of man, another resident of Chilliwack.

The suspect has been charged with one count of aggravated assault in relation to the incident. He remains in custody.

Mounties say the investigation remains ongoing.
