VPD recommending arson charges after fire at market in Vancouver’s Woodward’s building

Police arrested a man suspected of starting a fire in a Vancouver grocery store Monday afternoon.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says the suspect entered the Nester’s Market location on Abbott Street near West Cordova Street around 5:30 p.m.

Details are limited, but he allegedly lit a fire that resulted in “extensive damage to the store,” which has since closed.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service crews arrived and put out the flames.

Police say officers took one man into custody, and investigators are recommending he be charged with arson.

The VPD says it will release more details if and when the BC Prosecution Service approves charges.

Nester’s Market says it will remain closed all day Tuesday, and could not provide an estimated timeline for reopening.

The store’s shutdown comes as a hard hit to the neighbourhood after the London Drugs location, also in the Woodward’s building complex, closed permanently in January.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim calls the incident “concerning” and calls for more action against “repeat offenders.”

“We are told this individual is well-known to VPD. This raises serious questions about repeat offenders, and underscores why cities like Vancouver have been calling on senior levels of government to do more,” Sim said in a statement.
