BC Conservative leader candidate fined for non-compliance

The Conservative Party of BC says leadership candidate Peter Milobar’s campaign has been fined for non-compliance after a fee was received a day late.

Each leadership contestant must pay a series of fees to remain in the running, with the third fee of $40,000 due on or before April 1, the party says.

But Milobar’s payment arrived April 2.

“The Peter Milobar Campaign’s Financial Agent sent a photograph of a cheque to Party staff on March 29, 2026, indicating the cheque was on its way to the Party Office by way of regular (unregistered) mail,” the party said on its website.

“The Party received the Peter Milobar Campaign’s Third Fee on April 2, 2026, one day after the prescribed deadline and contrary to the Rules, which was brought to the attention of the Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC).”

Because of the delay, his campaign has been issued a $7,500 fine.

The committee says the non-compliance will not prevent Milobar from running, and his campaign is free to proceed.

“LEOC acknowledges that the Peter Milobar Campaign’s Financial Agent is a volunteer who appears to have made reasonable efforts to meet the stipulated deadline, has met every other financial deadline, and did not otherwise intentionally violate the Rules,” it said.

“However, it is the responsibility of each campaign and ultimately each Leadership Contestant to ensure all fees are delivered by the applicable deadline.”

All party candidates are required to pay $5,000 for their initial application, $10,000 by the day after the LEOC approves the application, $40,000 by April 1, and $60,000 on or before April 18, for a total of $115,000.

Each candidate also has to pay the party $20,000 as a “compliance deposit” after their application is approved. The $7,500 fine will come out of that deposit, the party says, and it must be replenished within seven days.

Milobar is considered the frontrunner in the race, according to a Mainstreet Research survey released in March. The leader will be announced May 30.
