A grade five teacher in Chilliwack has agreed to a reprimand after a second investigation into a case of making inappropriate comments to students.
The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation says that the teacher had asked students if they wanted to go into “the chokey” — a spike-filled closet, a direct reference to Roald Dahl’s children’s book Matilda.

The comments have now prompted an investigation under the Teachers Act, after the Chilliwack School District reported the incident on February 13, 2025.
The district says that the teacher allegedly patted his lap and told a girl in his class who was not listening to “please come and see me.”
There were body-shaming comments as well.
Both parties agreed that the teacher will have to attend and conclude a course administered by the Justice Institute by Sep. 8.
The comments were made during the 2024-2005 school year.
During the investigation, he agreed that his behaviour constituted professional misconduct.
The same teacher had received a letter of discipline from the district in December 2024 for inappropriate comments in a separate case involving secondary students.
Following that incident, the teacher was suspended without pay for three months in February last year.
