Jenn Hansma remembers that harrowing day when she was stuck in the Gastown SRO during the fire.
“There were no fire alarms, there were no sprinklers. There was no way of fighting the fires. The fire extinguishers were empty,” said Hansma.

Four years later, previous residents of the Winter’s Hotel SRO are still looking for answers.
“It’s not fair, they didn’t lose their home. They didn’t lose your best friend.”
Hansma is the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against Atira Women’s Resource Society, the non-profit that operated the Winter’s Hotel. She alleges that a wide array of fire safety breaches was to blame for the fire.
Atira released a statement on the anniversary of the fire.
“The fire at Winters was a devastating tragedy. It remains a profound loss for all those affected, including many within Atira, and we recognize that this anniversary may bring renewed pain and reflection for survivors, loved ones, and the wider community,” it said.
Atira has also stated that it has “continued to reflect, learn, and strengthen safety practices across its housing sites.”
Hansma says she and approximately 70 other residents who were displaced and lost everything don’t think that it’s enough. They want accountability.
Atira continues to state that they are keeping themselves accountable with various increased safety measures.
This includes “inspection routines, strengthened staff training, improved emergency preparedness, and efforts to identify and respond to risks as early as possible.”
For Hansma, this is not enough. Two lives were lost that day: Mary Garlow and Dennis Guay.
