The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says it has arrested a suspect after receiving a tip from a citizen that led to the seizure of a vehicle containing 20 catalytic converters.
According to the AbbyPD, officers were called to the area of Whatcom Road and Highway 1 after a report of a man who appeared to be cutting catalytic converters.

“Officers arrived within six minutes, located the suspect, and made an arrest,” police said.
“More than 20 catalytic converters were recovered, criminal charges are in progress, and the vehicle was seized as offence-related property.”
ICBC says thefts of catalytic converters have increased significantly in recent years, saying they contain precious metals that attract thieves as the value of the metal increases.
The insurer says owners can install anti-theft devices, such as catalytic converter locks or shields, to reduce the risk of theft. In addition, it says, there are further steps that can be taken.
“Adjust the security system on your vehicle to activate from vibrations such as those produced by a saw, if possible,” ICBC posted online.
“Consider installing theft prevention measures around your property as needed, for example, motion-activated lighting, security cameras, or landscaping to provide a clear view of your vehicle. Business owners should secure their vehicles behind locked fences.”
All thefts of catalytic converters should be reported to police, it says.
