‘It’s not on the table’: Eby says province won’t be handing over BC Place to the Whitecaps

The fate of the Vancouver Whitecaps is unclear after The Athletic reported Monday that the club may soon be heading stateside, and many options to save the team have been floated.

One of the possibilities mentioned was for the province to hand BC Place over to the team.

But B.C. Premier David Eby says that is not going to happen.

“It’s not on the table, and I would say the simple reason for that is the Whitecaps have shown absolutely no interest in taking over BC Place,” he said while talking to the press Wednesday.

“It’s not a moneymaker for the province. It’s an important critical institution, I would say, for hosting many events, including Lions and Whitecaps games.”

Eby said he would be meeting with Don Garber, the head of MLS, later in the day.

“I’ll be asking him…’Can we get a specific proposal from you or from the Whitecaps team about what it’ll take to stay and to do our best to see what we can do?’” he said.

“I note that in Columbus, Ohio, for example, Major League Soccer took over the franchise there, bought some time for the local community to come together and put forward a local bid.”

“Maybe that’s something that they could do, and we could work on that together, give Ryan Reynolds a chance to kick the tires on the Whitecaps.”

He says it is everyone’s goal to keep the team in Vancouver, but “we have to be creative and be cooperative in this project.”
