They can’t wait to see their favourite teams and superstars take the pitch at BC Place.
The club has been active in the community for years, helping kids fall in love with the game and even sending some players to represent B.C. and Canada.
“For the team, they are going to win it; right now we’re looking at maybe Argentina, Brazil and I’m from Africa and I have to go with my African people,” said Bobson Sesay, coach at BC Tigers FC.
As it gets closer to the World Cup, their coaches are just as excited.
“I also have a couple of tickets for the games as well. Yeah, I have the one for the Qatar that is getting played here,” said Hasim Moneer, another coach at the club.
The coaches say that FIFA coming to Canada is a game-changer for these kids.
“It’s a good opportunity for everybody here. I think the soccer will grow when the World Cup is here, and as it happens in a lot of countries, when the World Cup comes to the country, the country’s popularity in soccer gets a lot bigger,” Moneer added.
The coaches hope that FIFA’s presence in Canada will inspire players to work harder and see themselves on the world stage one day.
“Because I remember 1994 when the World Cup was in the U.S. and how U.S. soccer developed so much. So, now that we have it in Canada and our little kids going to see the World Cup, I’m sure they’re going to be excited. And guess what’s going to happen? Soccer is going to improve in Canada,” Sesay said.
The football fever is not stopping at the World Cup.
The BC Tigers are hosting their own annual tournament around the same time; an event often called the Mini World Cup of the community with teams from across North America in a showcase that hopes to inspire more parents to get their kids into the sport.
The first of the seven World Cup matches in Vancouver kicks off at BC Place on June 13.
