Man charged after alleged unprovoked assault on Vancouver restaurant worker

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says a 37-year-old man has been charged after an alleged unprovoked assault on a restaurant employee.

The VPD says it received a report of a man yelling profanities in the Mount Pleasant area at around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. When officers arrived, they saw the man throw an object at a vehicle. He ran away, but police soon found him in a nearby bush and arrested him.

Police say they then learned of an earlier report nearby of the alleged assault where restaurant worker suffered a dislocated shoulder. The description of the suspect matched that of the man in custody.

“The suspect has recently arrived in Vancouver, and has been the subject of over five calls to police this week,” said Const. Megan Lui.

“The assault appears to have been unprovoked, and the motive is unknown at this time.”

The man, originally from Ontario, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and obstructing a police officer.

VPD says he will remain in custody until a bail hearing.
