Jonas Alexander Douglas Huston was employed as a secondary school teacher at an independent school when he met the student. The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation was notified by the school authority in January 2025 about the inappropriate relationship.
“At the time of the report and after, Huston was not working as a teacher,” the commissioner noted in a consent resolution agreement posted online Tuesday.
However, Huston had met the student through school.
“Huston entered into an inappropriate intimate and sexual relationship with a former student. Huston was aware that the former student was vulnerable. Huston maintained close contact with the student after graduation.
“The sexual relationship started within five months of the student graduating.”
In the signed agreement, Huston admitted the relationship constitutes professional misconduct and agreed that, for 15 years, he will not apply for a teaching certificate in the independent or kindergarten to Grade 12 public school systems.
The commissioner said the teaching ban is an appropriate penalty because “Huston breached his position of power and trust as a teacher to engage in an intimate and sexual relationship with the student;” he “was aware that the student was vulnerable to Huston’s advances because of the personal relationship that Huston had fostered with the student;” and his conduct “had the effect of abusing or exploiting the student, who suffered harm as a result of the conduct.”
