An arrest has been made in connection with an Abbotsford shooting

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has announced that it has made an arrest and submitted charges against an Abbotsford man for the shooting at an Abbotsford encampment in March.

On March 23, at about 11:11 p.m., Abbotsford Police Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Whatcom Road Park & Ride, which had a large encampment.

Officers secured the area upon arrival and found a man suffering from injuries.

Despite undergoing medical care, the man died.

IHIT took over the investigation into the shooting.

On June 13, IHIT investigators arrested 39-year-old James Jared Yake of Abbotsford.

He has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm for the homicide of 69-year-old Wayne Versfelt of Abbotsford.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident involving the victim and the charged who knew each other.

“Anytime there is gun violence, it can leave residents feeling shaken and concerned for their safety, and it is particularly troubling and impactful when it occurs around the most vulnerable members of our community,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
