Residential gas bills to increase in B.C.

Fortis BC customers are in for a price increase starting next month.

The utility provider says that the monthly payment will rise by about $1.57 for residential gas customers, based on a consumption of about 7.5 gigajoules.

The reason for the price jump is that a higher percentage of renewable natural gas is being used in the product made from organic waste, called renewable natural gas (RNG).

The increase has been approved by the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC).

“Individual bills will vary based on use,” Fortis BC said.

The utility provider adds that it does not mark up the cost of natural gas, so “customers pay what it pays.”

However, global supply and demand, weather, and economic developments can affect prices in North America.

The increased price will be locked in until Oct. 1, as the next review will not occur for another three months.

It adds that the voluntary designated RNG program, currently costing $8.66, remains the same price.

Those customers can choose a rate of up to 100 per cent of RNG.
