A 22-year-old man has been charged with the attempted abduction of a child from a driveway in Surrey last weekend, police said.

Police allege a child was playing in a driveway outside a home in the 8100-block of 136A Street at around 6:40 p.m. on Saturday when a stranger approached the child and “physically picked up” the child. Bystanders intervened. The stranger put the child down and left the area.

The Surrey Police Service said bystanders detained the stranger for police.

The child wasn’t harmed.

Liam Robert Dobbs-Morency is facing one count of abduction of a person under 14 and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.

He remains in custody pending a bail hearing Thursday in Surrey provincial court.
