Third man sentenced for home invasion murder from 2023

The third man who pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter for the 2023 home invasion murder of 19-year-old Ryan Nagy has been sentenced.

Ousmane Keita was one of four who broke into Nagy’s home in an attempt to rob his father’s safe of guns.

During the home invasion, Nagy and his girlfriend were tied up, and Nagy was stabbed, leading to his death before the accused could get the safe open.

Nagy’s father returned home and caught the perpetrators in the act, and they fled.

The invasion was planned as much as three days prior, with text messages going between the four intruders.

The group travelled to Nagy’s home in a vehicle with stolen plates, a demonstration that they were attempting to cover their identities further, read the notes for sentencing from Justice Laurie.

In the oral reasons for sentencing, it was heard that Nagy was bound with duct tape and zip ties before being brought to the basement where the gun safe was.

Nagy was unconscious at the time. He was either already dead or dying from the stab wound to his chest.

The intruders attempted to wake him by splashing water on his face.

When Nagy’s father returned home unexpectedly, the group fled while one intruder, Rais Muksal Usman, was briefly in a struggle before getting free from Nagy’s father.

The intruders later burned their clothing to get rid of evidence of the invasion.

Justice Laurie stated that the Crown and defence jointly submit that a period of incarceration of six years is an appropriate sentence with credit for the pre-sentence custodial time.

In the notes for sentencing, Justice Laurie stated that the letters of support from family and friends for Keita showed that “his prospects for rehabilitation are good.”

The fourth accused, Rhoda Mboka Diabikulu, has yet to be sentenced.
