An abandoned harbour seal pup has been rescued by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Marine Unit and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR). 

The pup was found after a visitor to Bowen Island saw it alone and in distress on the shoreline at Seymour Bay, near Cowan Point, says the VPD Marine Unit.

Three veterinary technicians were taken to the area by the VPD Marine vessel to find the pup, says police.

Just before 7 p.m., the team arrived on the shore and safely secured the newborn female pup. 

The approximately week-old pup has been named “Canadian Bacon” and taken back to the VAMMR facility for medical attention. 

VAMMR staff are hopeful that she will be able to return to the wild in a few months.
