Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey hit the big screens over a week ago, and the hype hasn’t died down, but it’s not just the star-studded cast and high-end set design that viewers are going after.

It’s also the first movie to be shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film.

Did you know there are only 41 theatres in the world where you can watch The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm? 

Two of them are in B.C.: the Cineplex Cinemas in Langley and Silvercity Riverport in Richmond.

“We’ve been full, like full full; there’s not much room left, there’s front row seats or single seats left. Guests are super excited to watch it on the biggest format,” said Kevin Isaac, general manager, SilverCity Riverport Cinemas,” said Kevin Isaac, general manager, SilverCity Riverport Cinemas.

While some were lucky enough to secure tickets, others had to settle for a regular screening.

“70mm is the Rolls-Royce of film. The larger the film, the better the quality. It died many times, and then every decade or two a film comes along and revives the format,” said Michael Coate, film historian, in70mm.org.

“It’s really Nolan, Tarantino and Anderson in the last decade who made an effort to make some of their movies in some flavour of a large format.”

The Odyssey has already grossed more than $650 million worldwide after its second weekend.
