Low-income residents in Chilliwack now have access to a new affordable rental housing development in the city’s downtown core.

The Province of British Columbia announced the opening of Cedar Lá:lém, a six-storey, 64-unit building at 45835 Spadina Avenue. The development offers one- and two-bedroom homes for individuals and families with low incomes.

“We’re providing housing options so people can afford to live where they work, raise their families and stay connected to the places they call home,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.

“This community-centred housing creates stability, helps build stronger ties and opens opportunities for people who want to build a life in the heart of Chilliwack.”

The project was developed through a partnership involving the Province of B.C., the City of Chilliwack, Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society (MQHS), the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), and Cheam View United Church.

Funding for Cedar Lá:lém was provided through the province’s Community Housing Fund.

Cheam View United Church owns the property, and it has been leased to MQHS for 60 years, according to the province.

A residential amenities building is also planned for the site.

Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove said the city supported the project by waiving more than $1 million in fees.

“The City of Chilliwack is pleased to have been able to waive over $1 million in fees to support this project,” Popove said.

“The development of Cedar Lá:lém supports the city’s Homelessness Action Plan goal to increase the supply of affordable housing across the housing continuum, providing more safe, affordable homes for low-income families and individuals in the community.”

The new development is intended to help address housing affordability challenges in Chilliwack while increasing the supply of stable rental housing for residents in need.
