Two charged in violent robbery of 75-year-old Vancouver man

Two men have been charged in connection with the violent robbery of a senior in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside last week.

The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on July 28 near East Hastings Street and Jackson Avenue.

Police say a 75-year-old man was approached by a group while walking in the neighbourhood. The suspects allegedly pushed him to the ground, repeatedly punched him in the face and stole his belongings before fleeing the area.

The victim was taken to hospital with a head injury and bruising. He has since been released.

Investigators had previously released video of the attack in an effort to identify those responsible.

Police said the first arrest was made on July 30 when officers on patrol spotted a man believed to be involved in the robbery. He was arrested without incident.

A second suspect was taken into custody on Sunday after police responded to a report of an unwanted person inside a nearby home. Officers identified that person as a suspect in the robbery investigation and arrested him.

Vancouver police say 43-year-old Kurt Werner Steinhauser and 40-year-old Andre Joseph Brunet have been charged with one count of robbery.

Both men remain in custody and are awaiting bail hearings.
