The West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD) says it had to stop a small vehicle with four massive drums of vegetable oil strapped to its roof over the B.C. Day long weekend.

The industrial-sized containers were “dangerously unsecured,” police say.

“The occupants, who had been attempting to travel to the B.C. Interior with their improperly secured, overweight load, had their vehicle taken off the road and issued a Notice and Order for non-compliance,” the WVPD said.

“Drivers are reminded that they have a legal obligation under the Motor Vehicle Act to ensure that their vehicles do not exceed Gross Vehicle Weight maximums, that the roof can safely support the load, and that their cargo is safely secured.”

Police say this was one of the most surprising stops over the weekend, but it was not the only issue they encountered. A total of 205 violation tickets were issued, including 63 for excessive speed. As well, officers issued two roadside prohibitions and arrested a prohibited driver.

“Drivers are reminded to adhere to posted speed limits, remain sober, and ensure their vehicles and all cargo comply with safety regulations,” the WVPD said.
