The Maple Ridge RCMP says officers are working alongside the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) to locate an aggressive bear in the city.
Authorities were seen Sunday afternoon in the area of 123rd Ave. and 240th St., patrolling with dart guns as they searched for the animal.
According to police, the bear attacked a 3-year-old little girl outside her family home.
RCMP and conservation officers are asking residents in the neighbourhood to remain inside their homes while the search continues. Anyone who spots the bear is urged to contact the RCMP or the COS immediately and avoid approaching the animal.
BC Emergency Health Services confirmd with CityNews that the little girl was transported via air ambulance to hopsital due to her age. She is currently in hospital with non-life-altering injuries.
“As the bear had showed signs of aggression and already attacked a small child, officers made the decision to discharge a firearm in an effort to protect public safety in the immediate area. The bear was struck but continued to flee into a wooded area,” said the Maple Ridge RCMP.
The bear continues to be loose and being sought by both RCMP and CSO.
