A man was injured and taken into custody after jumping on the hood of a police cruiser and smashing the windshield, causing a significant amount of damage, the North Vancouver RCMP says.

Police say that around 8 p.m. Monday, BC Emergency Health Services requested help regarding a patient who had become aggressive during a medical call at Lonsdale Quay.

“The first officer arrived on scene, and the man who was the subject of the medical call immediately climbed onto the hood of the police vehicle and repeatedly punched and kicked the windshield, causing significant damage,” Mounties said.

More officers arrived, and the man was arrested, police say.

“The male was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained while attempting to break the windshield,” the North Vancouver RCMP said in a news release.

“The officer was also taken to hospital as a precaution after being exposed to debris from the shattered windshield.”

The suspect, who was known to police, is now facing several charges, the RCMP says.

“This was a dynamic and frightening situation for many bystanders who witnessed the incident in a very populated area,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak.

“We are extremely grateful that no one was seriously injured as a result of this incident.”
