The Penticton RCMP is warning the public about misinformation circulating online regarding the Summerland (Bald Range) wildfire.

Mounties say the caution is being issued in response to videos and images on social media showing someone lighting a non-lethal wildlife deterrent device, often referred to as a bear banger.

“Investigators have identified the individual in question, who is considered a witness and not a suspect,” police said.

“Investigators have determined the incident on video occurred kilometers away from the fire origin area.”

The RCMP says it is looking into all reports of suspicious activity that may have ignited the blaze and is appealing to the public for any further information.

“Investigators are interested in speaking to witnesses who may have observed any actions or activities around Princeton-Summerland Road and Bathville Road, near and in the Crump Recreation Site and the Trout Creek Recreation Site,” it said.

“Police are looking to review any dashcam footage, videos, photos, and information from Friday, Aug. 7, beginning in the afternoon hours.”

The District of Summerland evacuation order remains in effect. The Penticton RCMP says it is working with other detachments and the BC Conservation Officer Service to patrol the area and check in on properties and businesses.

Meanwhile, it says a man was arrested within the evacuated area Sunday afternoon.
