Charges laid after Surrey man allegedly chased a Vancouver security guard with a metal rod

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says a 41-year-old Surrey man has been charged after allegedly chasing a security guard while brandishing a metal rod.

Police say the guard was on duty when he found a man sleeping inside a parkade near Cambie and Dunsmuir streets.

“When asked to leave, the suspect allegedly produced a short metal rod and began swinging it at the guard and damaged the guard’s vehicle,” Const. Darren Wong said.

“The suspect then chased after the guard on a bicycle.”

Police say officers located a man matching the suspect’s description in a separate underground parkade, this one near Cambie and West Georgia.

The suspect was arrested without incident and has been charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000, the VPD says.

He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
