Teresa Wat has quit the B.C. Conservatives and will sit as an Independent, saying she can no longer serve under leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

Wat says Findlay failed to apologize over “serious and unfounded accusations” Findlay reportedly made about her that questioned her allegiance to Canada and were distasteful and hurtful.

In a statement, she cites widely reported remarks attributed to Findlay that called Wat “CCP,” a reference to the Chinese Communist Party.

Wat says Findlay told her this week there would be an apology, but none has been issued, so she cannot be led by someone who has questioned her loyalty.

Later Wednesday morning, Findlay issued a statement in response to Wat’s resignation, calling it a “betrayal of the hardworking volunteers, campaign workers and voters who helped get her elected as a CPBC MLA in the 2024 election.”

In her statement, Findlay says she and the MLA had had a private conversation in Taipei, during which she apologized to Wat directly.

Wat is the third MLA to exit the official opposition in as many days.

Rosalyn Bird left on Tuesday, a day after Ian Paton, while Peter Milobar left earlier this month.
