Longtime Liberal political staffer Braeden Caley is projected to win the federal byelection in North-Vancouver Capilano, the third victory for the Liberals Monday night.

The riding in North Vancouver was considered a safe Liberal seat, where former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson won for a fourth time last year with almost 60 per cent of the vote, his best result.

Wilkinson resigned as a member of Parliament in June to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, with longtime Liberal aide Braeden Caley stepping away from his role in Ottawa to launch a campaign for the seat.

Caley, who hails from B.C., held a string of positions with the party, most recently serving as deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

On Monday, he told supporters that voters chose partnership over division in a moment of uncertainty amid trade conflict with the United States, saying the byelection result is an instruction to stand strong against unjust tariffs and bring down costs for Canadians.

Caley says B.C. is central to Canada’s economic future, and moving back to the province is exciting as Canada reorients itself economically.
