British Columbia’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), has been notified following a crash involving a Surrey Police Service (SPS) vehicle and a civilian vehicle that resulted in a pedestrian being seriously injured. 

According to SPS, a collision occurred early Monday morning between an SPS vehicle and a black Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck near the intersection of 96 Avenue and King George Boulevard.

Police say the driver of the pickup failed to stop for officers. A short time later, the pickup was involved in a separate crash with a concrete SkyTrain guideway support on King George Boulevard near Holland Commons, leaving the driver injured.

At approximately 3 a.m., a pedestrian was struck as a result of the collision involving the SPS vehicle and the pickup truck. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers, Surrey Fire Service crews and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics responded to the scene.  

SPS says they notified the IIO shortly after the incident. The watchdog agency has now assumed conduct of the investigation.

The IIO is responsible for investigating all officer-related incidents in British Columbia that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing by police.
